What the tax card percentage includes

The base rate on your tax card covers state income tax, municipal tax, the health care contribution, the daily allowance contribution and Yle tax, plus church tax if you are a member. The rate is the total of these divided by your estimated annual income. The Tax Administration rounds it up to the next half percentage point, so 8.1% becomes 8.5%. The base rate is at most 60%.

The TyEL pension contribution (7.30%) and unemployment insurance contribution (0.89%) are not part of the tax card rate. Your employer withholds them separately on top of the tax, so 8.19 percentage points more is taken from your pay than the card shows. Both are tax-deductible, which lowers your taxable income.

Base rate, additional rate and income limit

Tax is withheld at the base rate until your income for the year passes the income limit, and at the additional rate on the part above it. The additional rate starts from a Tax Administration table that rises with income, plus municipal tax, the health care and daily allowance contributions and, for members, church tax. It is at least 2 percentage points above the base rate.

The income limit is an estimate of your total income for the year. From a monthly salary it is 12.5 months' pay, because holiday pay is part of the year's income. On €3,000 a month, for example, the limit is €37,500. If your income changes noticeably during the year, update your tax card in OmaVero.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does the calculator work out my tax card percentage?
It estimates a year's taxes and contributions on your pay and divides them by your annual income. It includes state and municipal tax, the health care and daily allowance contributions, Yle tax and church tax for members. Monthly pay is multiplied by 12.5 so that holiday pay is included. The result is rounded up to the next half percentage point, as the Tax Administration does. The calculation uses 2026 tax tables and your municipality's rate.
What does the tax card percentage include?
It includes state income tax, municipal tax, the health care contribution, the daily allowance contribution, Yle tax and, for church members, church tax. The TyEL pension contribution (7.30%) and unemployment insurance (0.89%) are not in it. Your employer withholds them separately, so 8.19 percentage points more is taken from your pay than the card shows. Both are tax-deductible, which lowers your taxable income.
What are the additional rate and the income limit?
The additional rate applies to the part of your income that goes over the income limit on your tax card. The income limit is an estimate of your income for the year. From a monthly salary it is 12.5 months' pay, which covers holiday pay. The additional rate is at least 2 percentage points above the base rate and at most 60%. This calculator's additional rate is an estimate based on the Tax Administration's 2026 table.
Why is my own tax rate different from the estimate?
Usually because of deductions or the starting data. The Tax Administration bases your card on your earlier taxation, which may include deductions such as travel costs or the household deduction that this calculator does not cover. Your own parish may charge more or less than the average church tax. The rate is also rounded up to the next half point, so a small difference in income can lift it by half a point.
How do I change the percentage on my tax card?
Use the Tax Administration's tax percentage calculator on vero.fi or OmaVero. Log in, enter an estimate of your income and deductions for the year, and you get a new tax card straight away. If your employer does not fetch tax card data directly from the Tax Administration, give them the new card. It is worth doing whenever your income rises or falls noticeably. This page only gives an estimate and does not change your card.
What is the tax card percentage on €3,000 a month?
An estimated 11.5% in Helsinki if you do not belong to the church. That is the base rate on the tax card, with annual income counted as 37 500 €, or 12.5 months' pay including holiday pay. It covers state income tax, municipal tax, the health care and daily allowance contributions and Yle tax. Pension and unemployment insurance contributions are withheld on top. In another municipality the rate may differ, so pick yours in the calculator.
