About YEL insurance

What is YEL insurance and who needs it?

YEL insurance (self-employed persons' pension insurance) is mandatory for all self-employed persons aged 18–67 whose YEL income exceeds the minimum threshold (€9,423/year in 2026). The YEL contribution is 24.40% of confirmed income in 2026 — a unified rate for all age groups after the pension reform.

YEL income is not the same as your actual business revenue — it is the confirmed value of your work contribution, set by the Finnish Centre for Pensions. YEL income determines not only your pension but also sickness allowance, parental allowance and unemployment benefits.

New entrepreneurs receive a 22% discount on the YEL contribution for the first 48 months. The discounted rate is approximately 19.03% in 2026. The YEL contribution is fully tax-deductible. Rates are based on 2026 data from the Finnish Centre for Pensions (etk.fi) and the Finnish Tax Administration (vero.fi).

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are the YEL income limits in 2026?

The minimum YEL income is €9,423.09 and the maximum is €214,000 per year in 2026. YEL income should reflect the value of your work contribution — it is not the same as your company's turnover or your actual salary.
