About side costs

What are employer-side contributions?

On top of the gross salary, Finnish employers pay mandatory side costs that add roughly 20% to the total employment cost. The largest item is the TyEL pension contribution (17.10% in 2026), which funds the earnings-related pension system.

Other mandatory contributions include the employer's health insurance contribution, known as sotu (1.91%), accident insurance (0.70% average, varies by industry), unemployment insurance (0.31% or 1.23% for large employers) and group life insurance (0.06%).

This calculator shows all mandatory employer contributions and also computes the employee's net salary, so you can see how much of the total cost reaches the employee's bank account.
