The marginal tax rate is the share of your next earned euro that goes to taxes and mandatory contributions. Nettopalkkasi.fi computes it numerically: the engine evaluates net salary twice — at the current gross and at gross + €100/month — and takes the difference. This naturally captures the progressive state-tax brackets, municipal tax, TyEL pension contribution, unemployment and sickness daily allowance contributions (the latter only once annual earnings reach €17,255), as well as the phase-outs of the earned-income credit (työtulovähennys) and the municipal earned-income deduction (KAV).

Why may my marginal rate differ from the figures published by Veronmaksajat (Taxpayers' Association)?

Public tables published by Veronmaksajat typically report the marginal *bracket rate* (e.g. 30.25 % or 34 %) without including the phase-out effects of personal deductions. Nettopalkkasi.fi also includes the earned-income credit phase-out (−2.22 % per extra € above €24,250) and the municipal earned-income deduction (KAV) phase-out (−4.5 % per extra € above €14,000). As a result, the marginal rate shown here is often a few percentage points higher than in Veronmaksajat's tables — because it reflects the total effect on each extra euro you earn, not just the headline bracket.
